iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR — new smartphones from Apple

The Cupertino — based company has expanded its line of Apple smartphones with three devices at once – the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR. The presentation took place on September 12, 2018, and you can buy an iPhone XS in Russia starting on September 28. Another gift to users was the appearance of the Apple Watch Series 4. We offer a brief overview of the new products.

iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max

The flagships received a screen diagonal of 5.8 and 6.5 inches, respectively, with a resolution of 2.7 million pixels.

The case is made of chrome — plated steel in the colors “silver”, “space gray” and the new “gold” for the iPhone X; glass trim on the front and back. Thanks to the tiny frame around the screen, the 6.5-inch XS Max is comparable in size to a regular iPhone Plus.

Weight and dimensions

iPhone XS Max: 208 g; 77.4 x 157.5 x 7.7 mm.
iPhone XS: 177 g; 70.9 x 143.6 x 7.7 mm.

Display

The following remained unchanged: diagonal, resolution 2436 x 1125, pixel density 458 ppi, contrast ratio 1000000:1 and a maximum brightness of 625 cd/m2. The HDR10 and DolbyVision formats, 3D Touch and True Tone technologies are preserved.

The innovations include a 60% increased dynamic range, which enhances brightness and color saturation, and supports content with a frame rate of 120 Hz.

Sound

The stereo speakers sound 50% louder than on the iPhone X. Four microphones provide high-quality sound recording. Coupled with Dolby Vision and HDR support, the iPhone XS will allow you to watch movies not only with intense color reproduction, but also with surround sound.

Efficiency

The smartphone is responsible for the operation:

• A 6-core A12 Bionic processor, made using a 7-nanometer process technology, with a performance of up to five trillion operations per second. It consists of two high—performance and four energy-efficient Vortex cores with a clock frequency of up to 2.5 GHz. XS applications run 30% faster than the A11, which uses the 10 nm process technology.
• The 8-core Neural Engine neuroprocessor performs tasks related to artificial intelligence, in particular, it supports real-time machine learning.
• The 4-core graphics processor performs tessellation and multi-layer rendering 50% faster, supports data compression without loss of information.
• The 64-bit M12 coprocessor monitors the operation of the sensors.

The new iPhone XS functions up to 70% faster, having no competitors in terms of speed.

Memory

4 GB of RAM versus 3 GB for the “dozens” — these are more applications and more difficult tasks. And of course, powerful games that have not been downloaded to your smartphone before.

The iPhone XS has 64, 256, or 512 GB of internal storage. Thus, the maximum amount of flash storage has doubled. The price difference between the iPhone XS with different memory capacities will range from 13,000 to 31,000 rubles.

Face ID

Due to the new processor and the modernization of the Secure Enclave, the speed of the system has increased by about a third. As with the iPhone X, the scanner projects a network of 30,000 invisible laser dots onto the face.

Battery and charging

The smartphones are equipped with 2658 mAh and 3174 mAh Li-Ion batteries. The iPhone XS has a less capacious battery than the iPhone X (2,716 mAh), while the gadget lasts up to half an hour longer due to the cost-effectiveness of the A12 Bionic and new energy-saving schemes.

The iPhone XS has 14 hours of video and up to 20 hours of conversations; the iPhone XS Max has 15 hours of wireless video and 25 hours of conversations; it works offline for up to two days in normal mode.

The increase in energy efficiency is 50%. This “extends” the battery life of the iPhone XS by 30% relative to the iPhone X. Similarly, the economical processor and more powerful battery of the iPhone XS Max provide up to 1.5 hours of additional work.

With a powerful adapter, the smartphone charges up to 50% in just half an hour. Charging can also be wireless, thanks to the modernization of the induction coil and an increase in its efficiency.
The XS’s full charge time is 25-30 minutes less than that of the iPhone X.

Protection from water

The standard of moisture protection is IP68 (immersion to a depth of 2 m for 30 minutes). The smartphone is resistant not only to water, but also to juice, beer or wine. The previous IP67 standard allowed short-term exposure to depths of up to 1 m.

Cameras

The improvements relate mainly to the software. The iPhone XS has a larger pixel depth — 1.4 microns versus 1.2 microns in the iPhone X, a new graphics processor and Smart HDR mode.

Main camera:

• dual camera, with 12 MP sensors;
• 2x optical zoom, 10x digital zoom;
• optical image stabilization;
• f/1.8 and f/2.4 apertures;
• enlarged sensor that captures 20% more light;
• improved lens focusing.

The red-eye effect has disappeared, which is due to the new processor, which performs up to a trillion operations when shooting each frame. You can adjust the depth of field in the photo after shooting.

The dynamic range of HDR photos has been increased by 60%. The palette of “portrait mode” settings has been expanded: for example, you can adjust the degree of background blur and depth of field in the photo after shooting.
The new Smart HDR mode offers instant shooting, without delay after pressing the shutter, as well as creating the best possible image by arranging elements from different shots.

XS shoots video with up to 4K resolution at 30 fps. Optical stabilization is available at resolutions up to 1080p, plus Slow-mo mode with a frame rate of up to 240 fps is available in Full HD. When recording, you can use a photo module and shoot with double optical or sixfold electronic zoom.

The front camera is the same — 7 MP with an aperture of up to f/2.2. There is a portrait mode and light presets (Natural, Studio, Contour, Stage, Stage Mono), HDR, Retina Flash, stabilization and 1080p video recording at 60 fps.

Two SIM cards

Another innovation that was first implemented in an Apple smartphone. However, the version with a physical slot is sold only in China. In other countries except Russia, you can order a model with a virtual eSIM, as in the Apple Watch.

Equipment

In addition to the smartphone, the package contains EarPods headphones with an 8-pin Lightning connector, a USB/Lightning cable, a 5-watt charger and documents.

iPhone XR

The simplified version of the iPhone XS is available in black, white, blue, red, coral, and yellow.

The case is made of 7000 aluminum, with a glass back.

The processor is the same as the flagships, but the 6.1-inch screen, unlike them, is equipped with a liquid retina LCD display with a resolution of 1792 x 828 pixels and Face ID. Instead of 3D Touch technology, a vibration response is used. There is only one 12-megapixel camera available, however, portrait mode is available thanks to new software and the smart HDR feature.

The device is protected from water and dust according to the IP67 standard, not IP68. The iPhone XR’s battery will provide up to 16 hours of video viewing and up to 25 hours of conversation, working up to an hour and a half longer than the iPhone 8 Plus. The price of an iPhone XR with 64, 128, and 256 GB of memory is about 65,000, 69,000, and 78,000 rubles, respectively.

Apple Watch Series 4

The design of the smartwatch has undergone significant changes. The 39.9 mm and 45.2mm diagonal screen grew by 30%, almost losing the frame. Its edges have become rounded. The displayed data can be flexibly adjusted to suit yourself, post photos, local time, and more. At the same time, the thickness of the case decreased and the speaker volume increased.

The manufacturers chose black ceramic for the back of the device, and sapphire crystal for the display.

The new 2-core 64-bit S4 processor has doubled performance and increased sound volume by 50%. The updated accelerometer and gyroscope are responsive to the wearer’s behavior.

If you fall and are inactive for more than a minute, the watch will call an ambulance on its own. The work of the heart is evaluated according to three parameters; a special application will help you make a cardiogram.
